Sharing Web Resources

The name and link of the organization that I selected is The Harlem Children’s Zone Inc. http://www.hcz.org/ it is a community based organization serving over 17,000 children living in 100 city block in Harlem NYC. Supports children from birth through college. They focus on  innovative, efficiently run programs that are aimed at doing nothing less than breaking the cycle of generational poverty. All HCZ programs are free to the children and families  it serves.
The one issue that caught my attention was the very high percentage of success that the children who are part of the various academic programs have. One would automatically assume that because this program is geared towards children of Harlem, that the success rate would not be that high. I also liked the fact that the program follows the kids from birth through college. There are not a lot of programs out there that would follow children that long. And funding for the HCZ is dependent on donations. I learned that HCZ caters to the diverse community of Harlem by providing the necessary resources for success.

  1. Edima,
I found your blog interesting as you mentioned the Harlem Child Zone’s community program serving children living in the city limits until they reach college. I thought keeping a record of children and their education is important. Do you know if the website mentions or lists a link to any success stories or histories of children graduating college and become successful independent adults? I think it would be neat to see previous students from this community visit the program as college graduates to show younger youth that even in times of struggle there is always the opportunity to strive for success. I enjoyed reading your post

    1. Jeanneth,
I was wondering the same thing regarding previous students. The only thing I was able to find was something about The College Success Office ,which supports students who have graduated from high school and HCZ programs. It helps them get into the most-appropriate college, then assists them throughout their college years. CSO places students in summer and winter-break internships, as well as organizes community-service projects. I e-mailed them to ask for more details regarding their college graduates.
